Bears are mammals of the family Ursidae. Bears are classified as caniforms, or doglike carnivorans, with the pinnipeds being their closest living relatives. Although there are only eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. Bears have a large body with powerful limbs. They have broad paws, long snouts, and round ears. Their teeth are used for defense and tools and depend on the diet of the bear. Their claws are used for ripping, digging, and catching. They are mainly omnivores, although some have a more specialised diet, such as polar bears. They eat lichens, roots, nuts, and berries. They can also go to a river or other body of water to capture fish. Bears will commonly travel far from food. Hunting times are usually in the dusk or the dawn except when humans are nearby.
Bears reproduce seasonally, usually after hibernation. Cubs come out toothless, blind, and bald. The cubs, usually born in litters of 1-3, will stay with the mother for six months, where they will be fed by milk and will start hunting with the mother in three months. Then, they are weaned. However, they will still remain nearby for three years. The cubs are sexually mature at seven years. Normally, bears are very solitary and will not remain close together for long periods of time. The Polar Bear, or Ursus maritimus can be found in the arctic regions of North America and Siberia. They are considered a potentially threatened species. There are currently between 22,000 and 27,000 Polar Bears in the world. Polar Bears are perfectly adapted to survive in the harsh conditions of the Arctic, where winter temperatures can often plunge to -45°C (-50°F). Adaptations to its cold, wintry habitat include its fur color, which blends with the snowy environment providing camouflage, and its large size, which helps maintain body heat.Source
Adult males weigh 350–680 kg and measure 2.4–3 m (7.9–9.8 ft) in length. Adult females are roughly half the size of males and normally weigh 150–249 kg, measuring 1.8–2.4 metres (5.9–7.9 ft) in length. When pregnant, however, they can weigh as much as 499 kg.
Despite what we think, a polar bear's fur is not white. Each hair is clear hollow tube. Polar bears look white because each hollow hair reflects the light. On sunny days, it traps the sun's infrared heat and keeps the bear warm at 98 degrees F.
Polar bear fur is oily and water repellent. The hairs don't mat when wet, allowing the polar bears to easily shake free of water and any ice that may form after swimming. Source1 Source2
